Made to Measure vs Off-the-Shelf Blinds: Is the Extra Cost Worth It?
It's tempting to pick up a set of blinds from a big high street store or order online, measure the window yourself, and have them fitted the same week. For some situations that works perfectly well. But for many Cornwall homes, especially older cottages and properties with less standard windows, it's worth understanding what you're actually trading off before you buy and can't return.
The Fit Problem
Off-the-shelf blinds are made in fixed, standard sizes. If your window falls between sizes, or your reveal is unusually deep or shallow, as is common in older Cornish properties with thick stone or cob walls, you can end up with gaps at the edges, a blind that doesn't sit flush, or one that simply won't fit the recess at all. Made to measure blinds are cut to your exact window, so the fit is precise from the start, no trimming, no compromise, no gaps letting in light or draughts. You can see in this blind example below we have fitted a roman blind on the outside and then a privacy voile roller blind on the inside of the window with the perfect dimensions for both the outside fit and the inside fit to prevent light seepage from either side of the blind.

Fabric and Finish
Off-the-shelf ranges are usually limited to a handful of colours and a small selection of fabrics designed to suit as many homes as possible. Made to measure opens up a much wider range, so you can match existing curtains, cushions or wallpaper, choose a fire-retardant fabric for a hotel or contract project, or pick something with more texture and weight than typical stock fabric. The difference is especially noticeable up close, in how the fabric hangs, folds and catches the light. We have many gorgeous fabrics such as the one below from Romo that we offer in our shop. Please pop along to our Falmouth shop to see our full range.

Durability
A well made bespoke blind, properly fitted, tends to last considerably longer than a mass-produced one. The mechanisms are generally sturdier, the fabric is often a heavier weight, and because it's fitted correctly to begin with, there's less strain on the components from day one. That matters if you're choosing between paying more once, or replacing a cheaper blind again in a few years. Our client has been happy with this interlined blind for many years in the property and still looks as good as the day it was fitted.

When Off-the-Shelf Might Be the Right Call
We want to be honest with you and there are situations where shop bought blinds make sense, a rental property, a temporary fix while you plan a bigger renovation, or a room where the budget genuinely doesn't stretch further. If your window is a completely standard size and you're not fussy about fabric choice, you may not need to pay for bespoke. It's worth being honest about that rather than assuming made to measure is always the answer.
